Lafayette in Alexandria begins this Sunday

Launch of the L’Hermione Commemoration and Museum Open House

On Sunday, May 31, take part in the kick-off commemoration event to promote the L’Hermione coming to Alexandria on June 10th.  This special event will begin on Market Square at 1:00 p.m. with remarks from featured speakers, including the Marquis de Lafayette, and conclude with the launch of a new free game, Tides of Revolution: The Hermione Game.  


The Tides of Revolution: The Hermione Game, is available as a free download on your mobile device.  The app highlights local stories connected to Lafayette and his time in Alexandria.  Play and be one of the first to unlock a badge!

Following the Market Square kick-off event, start your Lafayette tour Alexandria and explore seven museums for free! Learn about Alexandria’s connection with the Marquis de Lafayette through tours, hands on activities, and special exhibits.

From 1:00—5:00 p.m. enjoy free tours of seven museums:

  • Alexandria Archaeology Museum, 105. N. Union Street, 3rdfloor
  • Alexandria Black History Museum, 902 Wythe Street
  • Carlyle House Historic Park, 121 N. Fairfax Street
  • Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, 134 N. Royal Street
  • Lee-Fendall House Museum, 614 Oronocco Street
  • The Lyceum, Alexandria History Museum, 201 S. Washington Street
  • Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, 105-107 S. Fairfax Street

Each site features Lafayette’s role in the American Revolution or his return trip to Alexandria in 1824.  A complimentary shuttle will be available to transport visitors to Market Square, The Lyceum, Alexandria Black History Museum, and Lee-Fendall House Museum. Lafayette himself will be visiting with guests to Alexandria throughout the day.

This event kicks off the City of Alexandria’s celebration of its French connection, with events through June 14.  The French tall ship L’Hermione will be docking in Alexandria June 10-12.  For more information and other commemoration events, please visit www.VisitAlexandriaVA.com/hermione.
