Farmstead of Charlotte Hall
The Farmstead of Charlotte Hall, Charles County, Maryland
The Farmstead of Charlotte Hall is a small diversified farm in Southern Maryland.  Owners Tony and Lori Brown started organic gardening in the 1980s and have been vendors at the Old Town Farmers’ Market for more than 20 years.  Lori and Tony’s approach to growing their produce is to feed the soil using compost, cover crops, rock powders, and organic mulch to produce the freshest, most nutritious vegetables possible while improving the land and quality of life.  Read more here.

Market Events – June 27th
We welcome back the VCE Master Food Volunteers this Saturday to walk us through an easy strawberry and cucumber salad.  They’ll have grab-and-go recipe cards as well as taster cups of this yummy summer combination.  Stop by between 10:00 to 11:00 am to try a taste!  At the end of market day we will have our second bicycle food rescue event – Bike for Good!  If you’re interested in participating, email bikeforgood@alexandriava.gov.

Basil Pesto Recipe
Market to Table Recipe – Fresh Basil Pesto
Fresh aromatic basil is at the market—but what do you do with it?  Basil pesto, of course!  Here is a simple, yet delicious recipe that only takes five minutes to make!  You can adjust the ingredients to your taste such as using Romano instead of Parmesan cheese (for a stronger flavor), or substitute walnuts for pine nuts.  Toss the pesto with hot pasta, stir it onto boiled potatoes, or simply spread it on a baguette and strew fresh mozzarella and sliced tomatoes over the top.  Yum!

Compost Do’s and Don’ts
Don’t forget about Compost Alexandria–our free compost service for you to drop off your weekly compostable items right here at the market!  Wondering what to bring and what to throw away?  Green material:vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, leaves, fresh grass clippings, plant trimmings, house plants.  Brown material: dry leaves, straw or dry hay.  Materials not accepted: meat, fish, eggs, dairy, oily foods or grease, cat or dog waste.
