John and Markos Panas are the father-son duo behind this Alexandria-based bakery.  With fresh breakfast pastries, hearty Old World breads, and enough personality to wake you up—no coffee needed!  This booth is many shopper’s first stop in the morning.  Check out their facebook page where they’ve been known to post tantalizing pictures of their creations from their storefront in Belle View Shopping Center down Rt. 1.

Golden Galangal Beets are Back at Number 1 Sons!
Golden Galangal beets are finally back at our favorite pickle stand—Number 1 Sons!  These yellow beets are pickled in a vinegar brine with yellow curry and kaffir lime leaves. The Sons makes fermented foods that draw from food cultures all over the world — pickles, kimchi, kraut, masala beets.  Naturally delicious microbes from fermentation, like the good bacteria lactic acid, preserve their foods and give them a delicious, sour and tangy taste and helps your digestive system health, too!  Seriously, you need to try those golden beets.  http://number1sons.com/

Market to Table Recipe – Zucchini Pasta
Those of you who keep backyard gardens know that the bounty of a zucchini plant doesn’t just feed you, it feeds the whole street!  With an abundance of summer squash on tables, it’s time to find new ways to eat this warm weather veggie.  You can make zucchini pasta strips with a simple mandolin, or get a fancy veggie spiralizer for longer strands that look almost exactly like fettuccini.  With pesto from Cavanna Pasta, chicken from The Lamb’s Quarter and cherry tomatoes from any one of our farmers, you’ve got yourself a full meal with an extra vegetable serving!

The Old Town Farmers’ Market accepts SNAP/EBT and offers customers up to $10 in matching funds.
