Are you ready for some high school football?
We are excited about all the fall sports, but the purpose of this email is to inform you that the night of 22 Sept at 7:15PM is when the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club features our four high school football teams. An annual tradition for decades, “Alexandria High School Football Coaches Night” will soon be here; block the date on your calendar so you will have the opportunity to hear from the head football coaches of Bishop Ireton, Episcopal, Saint Stephens and Saint Agnes, and T. C. Williams.
This will be the night that we introduce the NEW T.C. Williams coach, Marc Matthie, to the Community! Marc is a Chantilly High School graduate and, as Offensive Coordinator, led Centerville to State and National recognition. He is committed to bringing TCW back to its glory days of football by attracting outstanding, role-model coaches who will get the best out of our outstanding TCW student-athletes. We all look forward to hearing Marc discuss his program and mention some of his superstars.
TCW is not the only football story in town. Bishop Ireton Coach Tony Verducci, with the most tenure and wins of any coach in BI’s 50 year history, is poised to take the team of over 20 returning seniors back to the State Championship. Episcopal Coach, Panos Voulgaris, has attracted some great offensive line standouts that he hopes will help his team win the Independent Athletic Conference outright, after achieving a 7-2 record in 2014. SSSAS Coach Bernard Joseph will definitely improve on a challenging 2014 season; will definitely position his team to be a tough city rival; and will leverage his outstanding, regionally recognized, tight end to help his team move the ball down field. The Sportsman’s Club is honored to hear from all these coaches and their outstanding teams and student-athletes.
The 22 Sept meeting, at the Old Dominion Boat Club, is open to all and will start with a reception at 6:30PM hosted by John O’Connor, of State Farm Insurance. The meeting will begin at 7:15PM with the Mayor of our City, Bill Euille, planning to serve as the honored guest host. This meeting will kick-off our 2015-2016 year. You will hear from all four coaches. Nick Roman (TCW grad), owner of Fairlington Pizza, the Original Neighborhood Pizzeria, will host a light dinner following the meeting. The Alexandria Sportsman’s Club is very grateful for these two sponsors and we hope that you will consider talking to John about insurance or stopping by Nick’s place in the Fairlington Shopping Center for some great pizza, pasta and gyros.
We look forward to seeing you on 22 September.
John R. Duke
Alexandria Sportsman’s Club
The Alexandria Sportsman’s Club, founded in 1947, is a non-profit and civic organization. Our sole purposes are to support local high school athletics and to recognize the achievements of our young athletes on the field and in the classroom. The sportsman’s club membership meets at the Old Dominion Boat Club on the third Tuesday of each month, where we gather in the fellowship of others with a shared interest in promoting competitive and recreational youth activities in Alexandria. We also present an Athlete of the Month Award recognizing a student-athlete selected from one of our four high schools. At each meeting a prominent speaker is featured. All meetings also feature drinks and snacks provided by the Sportsman’s Club, as well as a community dinner following the award presentation and the speaker. Please join us in helping to recognize and support our community’s youth athletes!
