National POW/MIA Recognition Day is annually observed on the third Friday in September. The President of the United States signs a proclamation each year so designating this date.

According to the U.S. Navy Website, there are 83,114 men and women listed as MIA. Over 41,000 are presumed lost at sea. The U.S. Navy MIA count is 33,274.
