Fall Sports End and Winter Sports Begin! | John R. Duke | Alexandria Sportsman’s Club

Greetings!

I’m so excited about what the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club has achieved so far this year; and what is coming up! This is a short monthly announcement to make sure you are in the know.

We have had two well-attended, fun and informative meetings: High School Football Coaches Night and REDSKINS Night. The Football Coaches demonstrated their competitiveness with our first ever ASC Jeopardy. At REDSKINS Night, Roy Jefferson was a super REDSKIN guest that made for a fun evening for everyone. And we have recognized six City of Alexandria Athletes of the Month including football players, a cross-country runner, and an athlete from the Recreation Department. We even had a 50/50 raffle in which one supporter took home $50!

The Fall Sports season is winding down with many of our outstanding teams in the playoffs. TCW Field Hockey won their league for the first time since 1995; this team has won their last 12 games. Episcopal Football is undefeated; and BI Football is 6-2, clinching a first round state-playoff game. All of our city soccer teams are doing very well; and the BI boys will match up against SSSAS in the first round of the independent school play-offs on this Friday at Witter Field. And don’t forget about Volleyball, Cross-country and the outstanding Tennis Players we have in this City. There is a lot going on … I hope you get out there with the ASC and support our very competitive local teams.

Next up, the ASC will bring on the Winter Sports! On November 17th at 7:15pm, the ASC will host our first ever combined Men’s and Women’s High School Basketball Coaches Night. We are really looking forward to hearing from some of our great women’s coaches, as well as our men’s coaches, as they describe their programs and forecast their seasons. You’ll hear more about the upcoming Sleepy Thompson basketball tournament, too; three of our City Schools will compete against one another in this upcoming event. More to follow on High School Basketball Night.

Plan to join us on November 17th at 7:15PM (complimentary reception begins at 6:30PM) UPSTAIRS at the Old Dominion Boat Club on 1 King St. And remember, all our proceeds go directly to our college scholarship fund.

President
Alexandria Sportsman’s Club

The Alexandria Sportsman’s Club, founded in 1947, is a non-profit and civic organization. Our sole purposes are to support local high school athletics and to recognize the achievements of our young athletes on the field and in the classroom. The sportsman’s club membership meets at the Old Dominion Boat Club on the third Tuesday of each month, where we gather in the fellowship of others with a shared interest in promoting competitive and recreational youth activities in Alexandria. We also present an Athlete of the Month Award recognizing a student-athlete selected from one of our four high schools. At each meeting a prominent speaker is featured. All meetings also feature drinks and snacks provided by the Sportsman’s Club, as well as a community dinner following the award presentation and the speaker. Please join us in helping to recognize and support our community’s youth athletes!
