Brussels Sprouts
Market Produce Highlight – Brussels Sprouts!
Brussels sprouts got a bad reputation when most people used to boil them to death—nothing tastes good when it’s cooked like that!  Nowadays, everyone is roasting this delicious vegetable that got a bad rap 20 years ago.  Roasting brings out the natural sweetness of cold weather produce and crisping the outer leaves of this veggie adds a nice crunch.  This recipe, from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, packs a nutrition wallop as an added bonus.  Find Brussels sprouts at the Farmstead of Charlotte Hall, Montoya’s Produce, Cameron’s Berries, and Spring Valley.

Plant Bulbs
Market Vendor Highlight – Plant Your Bulbs Now!
Plant your bulbs now!  If you want beautiful flowers in your garden or window box this spring, now is the time to plant your flower bulbs!  Most bulbs need the cooler fall and winter in the ground to spark the biochemical process that helps them before they bloom.  Cameron’s Berries has bulbs so pick them up while they’re in!

Compost Your Pumpkin
Compost Alex News Flash – Compost your Pumpkin!
As you take your Halloween decorations down, don’t forget about our Compost Alexandria team at market every Saturday.  They are accepting your pumpkins (as well as other kitchen scraps) and turning them into worm food and healthy, fertile soil!  Find our resource recovery station in front of City Hall on the N. Royal Street side of market square.

Talking to Kids About Compost
6,500 Pounds of Food Gleaned at Market To-Date!
As of Oct 31st, the market gleaning team has rescued ~6,500 pounds of fresh produce, bread (and even flowers) at market and donated this healthy food to at-risk Alexandria residents!  And, together with Compost Alex, we are turning food scraps into compost to help plants grow!  Photo, left, of Josh, Compost Subject Matter Expert, talking to kids about turning food into compost.

Thanksgiving Turkey
Order your Thanksgiving Turkeys Now!
You will be amazed at the difference between a free-range Thanksgiving turkey and the frozen, store bought version!  Our farmers are taking pre-orders and they usually sell out.  Stop by Lamb’s Quarter and Coulter Farms to reserve your turkey this Saturday.

The Old Town Farmers’ Market accepts SNAP/EBT and offers customers up to $10 in matching funds.
