Weekend service adjustments January 15-17, 2016 for rebuilding

Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of January 15-17 with service adjustments on four of six lines. Trains will operate as follows:

  • Green Line trains will operate regular weekend intervals.
  • Yellow Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals between Huntington and Fort Totten.
  • Silver Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston.
  • Free shuttle buses will replace Orange and Blue line trains between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly & Benning Road.
  • Red Line trains will operate every 9-18 minutes.

There is no scheduled track work on Monday, January 18.

Metro is investing $5.5 billion to install new rail, ties, platforms, escalators, signals, lighting, communication systems, and more. It represents the largest capital investment — and work effort — since the system’s original construction in the early 1970s.


Red Line Red Line
Trains every 9-20 minutes 

Single tracking in two zones to allow for rail renewal, joint elimination and communication cable installation.

  • Between Van Ness & Friendship Heights | 12:01AM Saturday until Closing Sunday.
  • Between Silver Spring & Glenmont | 12:01AM Saturday until Closing Sunday.

Red Line trains will operate:

  • Between Shady Grove & Silver Spring every 18 minutes
  • Between Farragut North & Silver Spring every 9-10 minutes from 7AM-midnight.
  • Shuttle train will operate between Silver Spring & Glenmont every 20 minutes. Transfer at Silver Spring to continue trip.

Orange Line Orange Line
Buses replace trains between Stadium-Armory & Cheverly | 12:01AM Saturday until Closing Sunday

Orange Line trains will operate as follows: 

  • Between Vienna & Stadium-Armory: trains every 15 minutes
  • Between Cheverly & New Carrollton: trains every 16 minutes

From 12:01 a.m. Saturday through closing Sunday, buses will replace Orange Line trains between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly. During this time, Minnesota Ave and Deanwood stations will be closed.

Free shuttle buses will operate on two routes:

  • Orange Express buses will operate between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly stations with no intermediate stops. Please add up to 20 minutes of travel time.
  • Orange Local buses will operate between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly, making intermediate stops atMinnesota Ave and Deanwood. Please allow 12-15 minutes of travel time for each station stop.

Last Train Times: 

  • The last westbound train of the night from New Carrollton will depart 27 minutes earlier. On Friday and Saturday nights, the last Orange Line train will leave New Carrollton at 2:09AM en route to Cheverly. The last westbound Orange Line train will depart Stadium-Armory at 2:53AM. On Sunday, the last train will leave New Carrollton at 11:09PM  and depart Stadium-Armory at 11:53PM
  • The last eastbound train of the night from Vienna will depart 3 minutes earlier. On Friday and Saturday nights, the last Orange Line train will depart Vienna at 2:23AM. On Sunday, the last train will leave Vienna at 11:23PM.

Work Performed: Rail & fastener renewal and platform rehabilitation between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly stations.


 Silver Line
Regular weekend service between Wiehle-Reston East & Ballston | 12:01AM until closing Sunday

Silver Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals between Wiehle-Reston East and Ballston only. Customers traveling to/from other stations should use Orange and/or Blue line trains to complete their trip. At Ballston, transfer between Silver and Orange line trains on the same platform.


   Blue Line
Buses replace trains between Stadium-Armory & Benning Road | 12:01AM Saturday until closing Sunday

Blue Line trains will operate as follows:

  • Between Franconia-Springfield & Stadium-Armory: trains every 15 minutes
  • Between Benning Road & Largo Town Center: trains every 15 minutes

From 12:01 a.m. Saturday through closing Sunday, buses will replace Blue Line trains between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road.

Free shuttle buses will operate between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road. Please allow 10-12 minutes of travel time for each station stop.

Last Train Times: 

  • The last westbound train of the night from Largo Town Center will depart 1 minute early. On Friday and Saturday nights, the last westbound Blue Line train will depart Largo Town Center at 2:23AM. On Sunday, the last train will leave at 11:23PM.
  • The last eastbound train of the night from Franconia-Springfield will depart at the regular time. On Friday and Saturday nights, the last Blue Line train will depart Franconia-Springfield at 2:29AM. On Sunday, the last train will leave at 11:29PM.

Regular weekend service between Huntington & Fort Totten | 12:01AM Fri until closing Sunday


 Green Line
Regular weekend service


Travel Tips

  • Red Line passengers who normally park at Glenmont, Wheaton & Forest Glen should consider parking at Silver Spring, Takoma or Fort Totten for more frequent service.
  • Metrobus service may provide an alternate travel option for some riders. To check, plan your trip using Trip Planner and select the “bus only” option.
  • Before traveling, consult the trip planner at wmata.com to check the special schedule and reduce your wait time. Trip Planner is updated to reflect weekend rebuilding schedules on Fridays; please check on Friday afternoon or later.
