Social Media: Parents vs Teens | Fireman Mike | Old Town Post

Parents:  Do you want to know what your children are doing with social media?

Teens:  Do you wish your parent’s would respect your privacy?

The answers to the these questions vary from family to family.  The answers often times cause many arguments between parents and their teenage Internet savvy children.

Parents want to make sure their children are safe when they scan the Internet and utilize various forms of social media such as Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter. On the other hand teenagers feel they deserve at least a little bit of privacy when communicating with their friends and checking out things on the Internet.

Some parents will take the hard nose approach and state “that as long as they are not 18 and they live under my roof then I say what they can and cannot do”.  Some parents are completely the opposite and may not care what their child is viewing on the Internet.

Perhaps, the better approach would be to talk with teenagers and educate each other on the good, the bad, and the ugly of social media.

The Alexandria City Public Schools will be hosting a free parent seminar about being social media safe.
