The National Weather Service (NWS) his issued a flood watch for Alexandria and surrounding areas from (Wednesday) 10:00 a.m. February 24, 2016 until (Thursday) 1:00 a.m. on February 25, 2016.
The NWS advises that a strong low pressure over Louisiana will track Northeast West of the Appalachians Wednesday night. Rain, heavy at times, will persist into Wednesday evening. Widespread rainfall amounts of an inch are expected with higher totals up to 3 inches possible.
Due to saturated ground, rains will likely turn into runoff with flooding of smaller streams and creeks likely. General inundation of low lying and urban flooding in poor drainage areas is also likely.
A flood watch means there is a potential for flooding based upon current forecasts. You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
