Bittersweet posted on their Facebook page the following thank you message to their customers:

It is with great sadness that I announce Thursday will be the last day for the Bittersweet corner café. As you probably know, a decision was made late last year to lease the space to Sweetgreen, a company I consider one of the great innovators in the food industry. It was a very difficult decision but after working here for 30 years it is time to consider other endeavors in life. I am currently working towards developing a Business Improvement District for Old Town – an initiative which would contribute towards beautifying our streets, assisting with solving our parking issues and bringing quality events to our public spaces all in an effort to support our very unique business community. As a native of Alexandria, I can think of no higher way to contribute to my city.
I want to thank all our loyal customers and employees who have created our community over these many years. Rest assured that all our affected employees have been offered jobs with our company or with other upstanding businesses in our community – OUR CATERING BUSINESS AND BAKERY WILL CONTINUE AS ALWAYS WITHOUT INTERRUPTION. You may still have the great homemade taste of Bittersweet delivered right to your home or office. Thank you to all of our loyal customers for helping us build one of the longest running businesses in Old Town – we could not have done it without you!
Best wishes
