Virginia “Ginny” Thrasher, 19-years-old, won the first gold medal of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.  She won the medal in the 10 meter air rifle shooting competition.  Ginny graduated West Springfield High School in Springfield, Virginia.

After graduation, Ginny went to West Virginia University where she is majoring in Engineering.  Ginny joined the most elite rifle shooting squad in the Nation.  The Mountaineers of West Virginia have won 18 NCAA shooting championships.

Ginny, as a freshman at WVU won 5 medals for the Mountaineers at the 2015 USA National Shooting Championships. Thrasher collected 4 more medals and 3 national titles at the 2016 USA National Shooting Championships.

In a teleconference with WVUSports, Thrasher was asked what life has been like since winning the Gold medal and she offered the following:

“It’s been a pretty crazy 24 hours. It’s been insane to go from waking up at 5 a.m. yesterday morning, completing my normal pre-match routine, getting on the bus, going to the range and shooting what was a very difficult qualification round for me. Then, to have a final that was an honor to be a part of, win (the final) and stand on the podium and hear my nation’s anthem was a very pride-instilling moment for me.
I then went on a whirlwind media tour that lasted a very long time. I got home to the Olympic Village around 11 p.m.”
