Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection
The Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection Drop-Off Center, located at 3224 Colvin Street, will be closed on Monday, September 5 for the Labor Day holiday. Normal hours of operation are Monday and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Dispose Household Paints Properly
Remember, oil based paint and related paint solvents are considered a hazardous waste, please dispose of these materials at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste center located at 3224 Colvin Street.  Latex paint is not considered a hazardous waste and can be discarded with your regular trash, as long as it is completely dried. To speed drying, leave tops off and add kitty litter. Try not to buy too much paint for a particular job.  Paint-store staff is usually available to determine the amount you need. For more information visit alexandriava.gov/RefuseCollection

Donate or Sell Unwanted Books
Did you read a good book over vacation? Now is the time to share it with someone!  The Alexandria Library accepts book donations, visit their webpage for details or drop off books at one of their four locations.  Also, consider selling books to a used-book dealer for cash or store credit. For future reading, consider downloading a digital copy of a book.  These electronic copies cost less and avoid environmental costs of manufacture and distribution.

Recycle Computers and Cell Phones
Have you recently purchased a new computer or cell phone, and tossed the old one in a closet or junk drawer? Don’t let these unused gadgets just gather dust around the house, reuse or recycle them!  Drop them off at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics center located at 3224 Colvin Street.  Staff will determine if the equipment can be reused or recycled. For more information, visit alexandriava.gov/Recycling.

Egg cartons can be recycled if made of paper fiber
Egg cartons can be recycled if made of paper, but if made of Styrofoam should be thrown away as regular trash.  And if you are collecting food waste to drop off at a farmers’ market Food Waste Recovery Station, the egg shells can be composted too!  And if you like toast with your eggs, the plastic bag that holds bread can be recycled with other plastic bags at your grocery store.  For more information visit alexandriava.gov/Recycling.
