Living in Old Town — Like Being on Vacation with all the Comforts of Home
Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia is a historic seaport town located minutes from our nation’s capital but with a uniquely friendly and relaxed lifestyle. And among the current fashions it’s not uncommon to see people in colonial costumes or men in kilts about town. Nor is it uncommon to hear bagpipes dancing through the air nodding to this colonial town’s Scottish founders. Our walkable town offers a bit of something for everyone.
History buff? Have historic adventures right in the neighborhood with Carlyle House, Gadsby’s Tavern, and Lee-Fendall available to tour as well as walking tours of historic sites.
Foodie? Old Town offers a plethora of unique chef driven restaurants. Also, the Old Town Farmers’ Market is the oldest farmers market in the United States — existing in Market Square over 260 years. Shop for your produce, eggs, fresh bread, and flowers and feel the history!
Athlete? Run or bike along the majestic beauty of the Potomac on the George Washington parkway trail. Head down to one of Old Town’s many waterfront parks for volleyball and frisbee. Also, kayak and paddle board along the Potomac.
Music Aficionado? There’s lots of live music in pubs as well as busking on the street.
Shopper? Unique boutiques offer an array of clothing, decor, and gift items.
Gambler? Walk over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to the new MGM Resort and Casino (opening in 2016). Or hop the Potomac Riverboat Water Taxi to the MGM.
Boater? Old Town is one of the oldest port cities in America!
This colonial port town also offers many festivals, parades, and celebrations throughout the year that bring not only the immediate community together but attract tourists from around the world. During the Holiday season, for example, the twinkle light will adorn the tree-tops on King Street setting a magical mood for the holiday season and beyond. And the first weekend in December will feature the Scottish Walk. That includes a parade filled with kilts, bagpipes, dancers, and dignitaries. There is also a homes tour associated with the weekend so you can be nicely-nosy and see several of your neighbors’ homes furnished for the holidays. And once the sun sets a parade of boats decorated for the holidays will shimmy down the Potomac.
This walkable town also offers the free King Street Trolly that will take you from the waterfront to the metro making stops every other block should you wish to stop at any of the boutiques, restaurants, or historic sites. And if you’re inclined to go a bit further you’re just minutes from Regan National Airport.
Living in Old Town is like being on vacation with all the comforts of home.
