Warmer weather and farming
While we’re excited as market shoppers for all of this unseasonably warm weather, keep your fingers crossed that the typical February cold comes back soon! Warmer wet weather means that large grazing animals like cows tear up the grass in their grazing fields, and unpredictable weather in late winter or early spring can have devastating effects on orchard crops like peaches. Just ask Eli Cook from Spring Valley—during last April’s snow storm they had to light fires between the rows in their orchard to keep the peach blossoms warm! We’re all anxious to pack away our parkas, but the crops and animals of the mid-Atlantic region really need their proper four seasons!
