City Council Votes to Rename Jefferson Davis Highway

On June 23, the Alexandria City Council voted unanimously to approve an ordinance renaming Jefferson Davis Highway to Richmond Highway in Alexandria, effective January 1, 2019.  This action regarding a portion of U.S. Route 1 follows three years of extensive public input. City Recognized for Commitment to Addressing Climate Change

The City of Alexandria and its Eco-City initiative ranked sixth on a list of 131 cities working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Southeast Climate Commitment Index, created by the nonprofit group Community Sustainability USA, recognizes the City’s accomplishments and efforts to address climate change. The list ranks cities and counties with populations above 50,000 in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Florida.

City Awarded Historic Preservation Grant

Alexandria has received a $50,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. The grant is for the preservation of the Freedom House Museum, located at 1315 Duke St., which was the former headquarters of one of the nation’s largest slave traders. The grant will be used for development of a preservation plan to guide the collaborative efforts of the City and the Northern Virginia Urban League in the management and preservation of the museum.

Teaming Up to Improve Neighborhood Parks

The City and Rebuilding Together Alexandria (RTA) have partnered to improve the neighborhood parks in the Hume Springs and Lynhaven community. As part of this project, volunteers working with RTA constructed a garden in Four Mile Run Park along Dale Street. After the site is completed at the end of summer, a new community organization comprised of residents from the Hume Springs and Lynhaven neighborhoods, in partnership with the City, will manage the garden. Planting will begin in the fall.

Alexandria’s Academy Programs Accepting Applications

Learn more about your City! Alexandria’s diverse academy programs are accepting applications for fall 2018 sessions. The City Academy, Senior Academy, Community Fire Academy, Community Police Academy, and the new Community Sheriff’s Academy programs are designed to inform, engage and educate the community about local government operations. Applications for these programs now being accepted through July 27.

Write as Rain Raises Water Awareness

Alexandria is participating in the inaugural “Write as Rain” campaign, a regional effort with the Northern Virginia Clean Water Partners designed to get residents thinking about how their actions on the street can impact local streams and rivers.
