Mark Your Calendar – Fall Registration Begins August 15

2017 Photo Contest Winner & Fall Program Guide CoverView the classes, leagues, activities and events taking place September through December in the Fall Program Guide, which is now online. Or, pick up a printed copy from a library or recreation center throughout Alexandria. Fall registration begins at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, August 15 for Alexandria residents and on Friday, August 17 for nonresidents. Register online or in-person at the Registration & Reservation Office, located at 1108 Jefferson St., Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Fall cover features John H. Zimmerman’s Sitting on a Bench, Parks category winner of the 2017 RPCA Photo Contest. Participate in the 2018 RPCA Photo Contest by submitting your best original photos taken at any City of Alexandria park, center, program or event or vote for the photo that best represents the Department’s mission to “enrich the City of Alexandria by creating meaningful experiences through public space, cultural activities and programming.” Winning photos will receive great prizes and be featured in City facilities and online. View contest rules.

2018 Recreation Photo Contest dates:

  • Photo Submissions: September 1 – October 15
  • Public Voting: November 1 – November 15
  • Winners Announced: December 1

Free Summer Fun In Your Neighborhood

Movie Night in the ParkMeet your neighbors and enjoy the warm weather and the outdoors. There’s no reason not to take part in free summer fun in Alexandria!

Bring the whole family to Movie Night in the Park on Saturday, August 11, 6 to 9:30 p.m. at Chinquapin Park, 3210 King St. Start the evening with open swim in Chinquapin’s Rixse Pool 6-7:30 p.m., then head outside for a free outdoor showing of Paddington 2 at 8 p.m. Bring swimsuits, towels, snacks, beverages, lawn chairs, blankets and bug spray, and enjoy the show! Special thanks to our partners, Chinquapin Advisory Council and The Goodhart Group for supporting this event.

Join Alexandria Police and Recreation Department staff to celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, August 7, 5-8 p.m. at Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St. National Night Out is a community campaign designed to heighten crime prevention awareness while strengthening neighborhood spirit and community partnerships. Enjoy free swimming, DJ music, bounce house, refreshments and more, while learning about City services.

Customer ServiceThe Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (RPCA) guarantees a consistently superior customer experience to all who participate in programs or visit parks and facilities. Interactions will be Responsive, Professional, Courteous and Accountable.

To ensure satisfaction, we offer all customers:

  • Satisfaction Guarantee: Registrants not satisfied with a class or program are encouraged to contact RPCA as soon as possible so we can make it right. If we are unable to correct the concern, a credit or refund may be issued.
  • Financial Assistance: To allow for maximum resident participation, financial assistance is available to City of Alexandria residents, including a 20% discount for residents ages 55 and up. View the full policy.

2018-19 Afterschool Registration Now Open

Afterschool ProgramsRegistration for afterschool programs for the 2018-19 school year is open. Options are available throughout Alexandria and take place 2:30-6 p.m. on days when ACPS schools are open:

  • Power-On Program for ages 5-12 entering Kindergarten through grade 6. 6 locations available. Please Note: For the first week of school, registration will only be available at Lee Center’s Registration & Reservation Office, located at 1108 Jefferson St. Online registration will not be available August 31-September 6.
  • Youth Achieving Greatness for ages 5-12 at Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center, 1108 Jefferson St.
  • Afterschool Nature Buddies for ages 5-10 at Jerome Buddie Ford Nature Center, 5750 Sanger Ave.
  • Afterschool Teen Club for ages 12-16 entering grades 6-9 at Leonard Chick Armstrong Recreation Center, 25 West Reed Ave.
