Alexandria Symphony Celebrates 75th Anniversary Season

ASO and Maestro Ross Kick off Anniversary with Outdoor Concert

Alexandria, VA— Alexandria Symphony Orchestra (ASO) will present an outdoor concert in celebration of its 75th Anniversary on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Virginia Theological Seminary.  The concert will feature ASO musicians, led by Maestro James Ross, who took over as the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director on August 1, 2018.

The anniversary concert will be Maestro Ross’ first performance with the ASO under his baton as Music Director. Audiences will enjoy a mix of patriotic tunes, Broadway hits and light classical favorites. The one-hour format will suit families and novice symphony-goers with accessible music and an introductory performance by students from Sympatico, the ASO’s before- and after-school music program at John Adams Elementary School.

James Ross brings with him an extensive portfolio of international experience and musical connections. He presently conducts the Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès in Catalonia, Spain, is a member of the conducting faculty at the Juilliard School at Lincoln Center, and is Orchestra Director of the National Youth Orchestra USA at Carnegie Hall.  He just completed a vital 16-year tenure as Professor and Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Maryland, where he became known for his ground-breaking performances.

“To be 75 is grand, and to be an orchestra and be 75 is rare indeed,” says Maestro Ross. “To be the newly-named Music Director of the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra in its 75th anniversary season is a rare honor and a thrill for me.  Can we celebrate this auspicious milestone with a piquant mix of old and new, of diverse voices and urges—like the surging city of Alexandria itself?  We can…we will…and we are!”

As partners in the celebration, the symphony thanks its corporate sponsors: Wells Fargo Advisors, Northern Virginia Community College – Alexandria Campus, Caudron Megary Blackburn Wealth Management, Renner & Company – Certified Public Accountants, Woodbine Rehabilitation and Healthcare, Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, and Fidelity Investments. ASO also thanks the generous individuals who sponsored and contributed to the 75thAnniversary Campaign and concert.
