Friends of the Alexandria Waterfront (FAW) strives to enhance and maintain the Alexandria waterfront in a manner which honors its history as well as the history and architectural character of all of Old Town Alexandria. To that end, FAW will:

- Continue to raise funds to support the appeal by the “Iron Ladies” to the Virginia Supreme Court challenging the Waterfront Small Area Plan adopted by the Alexandria City Council on January 21, 2012. FAW also will support financially other relevant legal proceedings, including opposing the City of Alexandria’s appeal of the Board of Zoning Appeals decision requiring a supermajority vote by Council to change the zoning for the City’s W-1 zone and Carr Hospitality’s proposed hotel on the Cummings site.

- Promote a reconsideration of the Waterfront Small Area Plan, specifically with regard to the redevelopment of the Robinson Terminal and Cummings/Turner properties in a manner consistent with the character of Old Town and which respects Old Town’s physical constraints imposed by its streets and sidewalks and limited parking availability in the waterfront area. To this end, FAW will organize a citizens group to develop proposals for the redevelopment of specific sites within Old Town. To the extent possible this group will draw upon the experience of other cities in redeveloping their waterfronts.

- Address waterfront-related infrastructure issues, including flood mitigation, commercial docking facilities, marinas, and other water-related activities along and near the waterfront.

- Stimulate the organization of one or more waterfront “friends” groups that will promote the proper maintenance of the waterfront, including lobbying the City for better maintenance of City-owned properties along and near the waterfront as well as more frequent removal of waterborne trash and debris.

Founders Park was created in 1978 through the efforts of a small group of residents along Queen, Quay, Princess and Union Streets who opposed a plan to build an apartment complex of four 18-story towers at the site. If were not for their strong opposition to the proposed development, Founders Park would not exist today.
The City of Alexandria maintains Founders Park as a passive park; private events are not permitted. The Alexandria Waterfront Small Area Plan recognizes the Founders Park’s special role on the waterfront and preserves the current use and character of the park.
Founders Park Community Association
Founders Park Community Association (FPCA) was incorporated in 1979 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit membership organization dedicated to improving and maintaining Founders Park and the quality of life in the Founders Park Area. The FPCA has been working with the City of Alexandria to protect, preserve, and improve Founders Park’s beautiful green space and Potomac shoreline for over 30 years.
FPCA members hold informative monthly get-togethers and park clean-ups (continuing a tradition begun nearly 35 years ago) and two annual events – their annual meeting in the Spring and an annual block party at Quay Street in the Fall.

Whether you are new to Alexandria or have been in the community for several years we would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the Old Town Civic Association. OTCA, as we are generally known, has a special status in a city without ward politics; we are a collective voice for citizens of Old Town that is respected by city government. The OTCA’s mission since our founding in 1951 – to preserve the historic and residential character of Old Town – has been accomplished with the informed and active participation and support of citizen members. Our objectives are:

- To give citizens an effective way to channel problems to the proper authorities.
- To provide an open forum to explore and resolve community issues.
- To achieve understanding between the commercial and residential interests in the area.
- To work cooperatively with other groups seeking the betterment of Old Town and Alexandria.

OTCA is governed by Officers and a Board of Directors elected by the membership. We stay abreast of City issues that directly and indirectly affect Old Town and its neighbors and write a monthly newsletter to keep members informed of important issues and up-coming events. Board members also represent Old Town citizen’s interests before City Council, the Planning Commission, the Board of Architectural Review, and other policy-making bodies.
We meet on the second Wednesday of the month at the Lyceum, 201 South Washington Street. A half hour of socializing with neighbors starts at 7:00 p.m. followed by the evening program at 7:30 p.m. Programs cover a wide variety of timely and informative topics including, for example, presentations by City officials and other professionals on development and land use issues in Old Town, traffic and parking, City policy, historic preservation, and garden design and maintenance.

Alexandria Sportsman’s Club, founded in 1947, is a non-profit and civic organization. Our sole purposes are to support local high school athletics and to recognize the achievements of our young athletes on the field and in the classroom. The sportsman’s club membership meets at the Old Dominion Boat Club on the third Tuesday of each month, where we gather in the fellowship of others with a shared interest in promoting competitive and recreational youth activities in Alexandria. We also present an Athlete of the Month Award recognizing a student-athlete selected from one of our four high schools. At each meeting a prominent speaker is featured. All meetings also feature drinks and snacks provided by the Sportsman’s Club, as well as a community dinner following the award presentation and the speaker. Please join us in helping to recognize and support our community’s youth athletes!
